Bedrooms should be safe places where your family can rest comfortably. Unfortunately, if you’re not careful, there are a number of potential risks that could turn those peaceful sanctuaries into danger zones. Here are a few important things to look for when childproofing the bedrooms in your home:

  • Make sure all furniture is sturdy and secured safely to the wall to prevent tipping

  • Install safety latches on all drawers, doors, and cabinets

  • Seal off all electrical outlets using safety plugs

  • Ensure that any sources of heat have guards around them to prevent burning

  • Keep toys and other kid-friendly items stored where your child can easily access them (storing attractive items up high and out of reach can entice children to climb)

  • Use dresser knobs that are too big to swallow but too small to provide a foothold for climbing

  • Install protective guards or cushioning on any sharp edges or corners

  • Tie or remove cords to window shades and blinds to prevent strangulation

  • Avoid curtains that can easily be pulled down

  • Install window guards with quick release features on every window, especially those on upper floors

  • Keep furniture and other climbable surfaces away from windows

  • To prevent crib falls, lower your child’s crib when they are able to stand and potentially climb out

  • Make sure all large containers, including toy boxes and chests, have lids that can easily be opened from the inside, or better yet – remove lids altogether
