Just like the kitchen, the bathroom can be an area of your home where many hazards exist. Cupboards and medicine cabinets hold many potentially harmful items that may look appealing to a curious little one. Likewise, with so many water sources, your child could be in danger if not properly supervised and protected. Here are a few basic safety precautions to keep in mind for the bathroom:

  • Remove or properly store dangerous items, such as scissors and razors

  • Keep all medication, health, and beauty products – including toothpaste, mouthwash, lotions, and cosmetics – safely locked up and out of reach

  • Install a toilet seat lock

  • Set the temperature of your hot water heater to no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent scalding

  • Store all bathroom appliances safely out of reach, including curling irons, straighteners, and blow dryers

  • Seal off all electrical outlets using safety plugs

  • Invest in a child-resistant trash can (or keep it behind a closed, secured door)

  • Use a non-slip mat in the bathtub to prevent slips and falls

  • Install a hook-and-eye latch high on the outside of the bathroom door, and keep it locked when not in use

  • Never leave your child unattended while bathing

  • Always empty the tub completely once bath time is over, and stay in the room until it’s fully drained

  • Post the number for Poison Control where it can quickly and easily be accessed
